A Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Reproductive Biology

The Center for Studies in Reproduction spans several different academic departments of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Investigators within the Center approach reproductive biology from a multidisciplinary perspective with an emphasis on developmental endocrinology, ovarian physiology, perinatal endocrinology, uteroplacental physiology, cardiovascular physiology, reproductive behavior, neuroendocrinology, cancer research, and mechanisms of hormone action. For example, the molecular paracrine/autocrine regulation of ovarian, uterine, placental, prostatic, and mammary gland growth and development by steroid hormones, peptide growth factors and angiogenic factors is a major focus of study within the Center. The neuroendocrine regulation of the reproductive system and reproductive behavior by steroid hormones, also represents a major area of scientific endeavor. Investigation of the perinatal and developmental endocrinology of the fetus and placenta during primate pregnancy is a primary focus, and one of the few programs involved in this specific area of research in the country. The regulation of endothelial and vascular smooth muscle function by G-proteins and the nitric oxide system within the uterus and fetus is also an area of great research interest. Finally, a highly unique program of research in the hormonal regulation of gametogenesis, ovulation, and spawning of fish is also offered. Advances in research made within the Center for Studies in Reproduction further our understanding of fertility, reproductive behavior, pregnancy maintenance, fetal development, and issues related to women's health.

Key Region for Biomedical Research

The University of Maryland, Baltimore is located at the center of the Washington-Philadelphia corridor, the highest concentration of public and private biomedical research institutions and biotechnology/pharmaceutical companies in the nation. The University itself is recognized as one of the nations’ fastest growing centers of biomedical research, receiving grant and contract support in excess of $136 million annually.

More than 1,650 faculty and 6,066 students from 45 states and 12 countries are actively engaged in research, interdisciplinary study and clinical practice at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Faculty within the Center for Studies in Reproduction collaborate with leading scientists at the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, the Carnegie Institute, and numerous other leading research institutions. Center faculty also participate in joint research initiatives with other University of Maryland programs, including the Maryland Biotechnology Institute, the Baltimore Veteran’s Administration Medical Center, and the Center for Marine Biotechnology.

Great Location

In addition to its superb location for professional development, Baltimore is a great place to live.
